Abstract

This community service program was conducted at TK Aisyiyah 3 in Kupang, focusing on character building for early childhood learners through reading instruction using phonics and storytelling methods. The program was motivated by the limited effectiveness of conventional reading approaches and the need to instill positive values from an early age. Phonics was applied to systematically help children recognize letters, sounds, and simple words, while storytelling was used as an imaginative medium to convey moral lessons. The activities included teacher training workshops, classroom mentoring, the provision of learning media, and continuous evaluation. The results indicated significant improvements in children’s early literacy skills, particularly in phoneme recognition and word formation, along with the development of positive character traits such as empathy, honesty, and responsibility. Teachers also showed enhanced pedagogical competence and creativity in teaching. The program outputs included teacher training modules, phonics media, illustrated storybooks, and a more interactive learning environment. Overall, this program effectively strengthened both early literacy and character development and can serve as a replicable model for other early childhood education institutions.
